Roman Clay & Microcement Bathroom in Playa Vista, Los Angeles
This Playa Vista remodel, completed in collaboration with AWM Design Studio, focused on creating a quiet, material-driven interior where texture and tone define the space.
Our role was to execute Roman Clay and Concretta finishes across key areas, including a seamless bathroom environment.
Design Approach
The design direction centered around subtlety. Rather than relying on contrast, the space was built around layered tones and soft transitions.
We developed custom Roman Clay samples to ensure consistency throughout the home while allowing each room to respond to natural light differently.
Application & Process
Roman Clay was applied across multiple rooms using custom-adjusted Portola Paints colors, including a lightened version of Topanga and Patagonia in brighter areas.
In the primary bathroom, we installed a Concretta system within the shower. This material was selected for its ability to provide a seamless, waterproof surface while maintaining a soft, natural texture.
Color matching between the shower and surrounding surfaces was critical to achieving a unified result.
What We’ve Seen on This Project
Projects like this rely heavily on coordination between design and application. Small adjustments in tone or texture can shift the entire feel of the space.
Lighting also plays a significant role. These finishes reveal themselves gradually, which is why consistency in application matters as much as material selection.
Result
The final space feels grounded and intentional. Light moves across the surfaces in a way that reveals texture without creating glare or harsh contrast.
It’s a restrained, material-focused environment that prioritizes atmosphere over visual noise.
